For spring break I want to go on an epic road trip... in the Trans Am. How much of a bad idea is this? The trip I want to take is 1800 miles round trip to the southern South Carolina coast to tent out by the beach. 1800 miles at 15mpg (or so) is 120 gallons of gas which at $3.30/gal works out to be $400. That is a 15 hour drive but I could chop that drive down by spending one night in a friends house in Georgia. Also, as of right now the windows don't fit perfectly, the wiper motor wiring is messed up and the motor won't turn off (I unplugged it to temporarily solve the issue), the trans hasn't been tuned, the sun visors installed (I've never put them in in the three years I've owned the car), and it needs a completely new exhaust system. How bad of an idea is it to go on an almost 2000mi road trip with an old car? Have you ever done a roadtrip in a classic?

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin'
We gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there
I'm east bound, just watch ol' Bandit run
Bad decisions make great stories. Do it.

Risky, but it could definitely be a good time. I can't wait to road trip in the Datsun.

Drive the balls off it between now and then. Work out every bug you can think of. Pack a complete gear bag, keep your cell charged and your AAA/Hagerty+ membership paid in full.
You may not need this stuff, but I'd hate for you to have your car towed via wrecker to a garage that charges you an arm and a leg.

Well if you have the will.... Im not really a beach person, so its not worth it to me.

Do it now while you still can. Won't be long until crazy spur of the moment trips become impossible due to work and family priorities.

But this potential vacation is still like 6 months out.

$400 isn't too bad. To do such a trip with a €300 fuel budget in Europe, you'd have to drive something like a Fiesta 1.0.
Try to to get your car sorted out by driving it a lot and fixing niggles as they arrive. Also, as crowmolly suggested, have the best roadside assistance/towing plan money can buy. The cheaper ones only tow you to a garage nearby, which sucks. Get the premium stuff where they have to tow your car all the way home.

Nor am I, but I want to have a clear end point for my car (aka, running out of road). But I do enjoy swimming.

but you get what I'm saying though. Even more reason to do it is that you'll have a little time to make sure everything is in order and sorted for the trip.

Out of curiosity, what beach is your planned endpoint? That is a good way to think of it, although my endpoint is normally time (I don't go on planned trips often)

I did a round trip from Lindau on Lake Constance to Alte Liebe and back about two months ago in a new MB A-Klasse. Just under 1800km. "Only" €293 in fuel.
On the other hand, when back in the US last month, I drove the 1978 Monte Carlo beast with 375hp (that get 12 miles per gallon downhill with a tailwind) about 800 miles and spent less than $200US on fuel.

I'm thinking Hunting Island State Park. I stayed on an island a few miles away several years ago and loved the location.

I did some rough maths and you would need to hit around 6,7-6.9l/100km for 2900 kms. Doable in many new-ish smaller cars, but not exactly fun.

Agreed 100%. Not possible in Deutschland with any fun.

God no! I hate tourist-y places. I much prefer isolation than tourist traps. I'll take camping over a hotel, resort, or cruise any day.

for the most part I agree with you, sometimes I prefer a hotel though.
